R Praggnanandhaa scripted history by becoming the first Indian player ever to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, conquering Magnus Carlsen’s home turf in spectacular fashion.

Heading into the final round, Pragg was locked in a tense title race with Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja. To secure the championship, the Indian star needed a classical victory against Germany’s Vincent Keymer — a player who had not lost a single classical game in the tournament until then.

Praggnanandhaa delivered under pressure.

Playing with the white pieces, Pragg gradually outplayed Keymer in a sharp Queen’s Gambit Declined and took complete control in the endgame after launching a powerful kingside attack. His precise tactical play and dominant rook-and-knight coordination eventually forced Keymer into a hopeless position, securing a huge classical victory.

The result guaranteed Pragg the Norway Chess 2026 crown after Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja drew their classical encounter.

The title marks one of the biggest achievements of Praggnanandhaa’s career so far. During the tournament, he defeated Magnus Carlsen twice and produced a stunning late surge to finish on top against one of the strongest fields in world chess.

While Magnus Carlsen defeated D Gukesh in the final round, the spotlight firmly belonged to Praggnanandhaa, who achieved what no Indian had managed before — winning Norway Chess in the backyard of the world No. 1.
